MADRA November 2023 News

Emergency Preparedness Day

Don’t forget the Emergency Preparedness Day has been rescheduled to Saturday 16 December at 10.30am – 2.30pm in the Lions Park.

Come along and chat with local emergency services workers and community organisations and gather more information on being fire-ready this summer while enjoying some food, music and fun family activities.

Endemic Garden Opening

More than 100 people attended the grand opening of the Mallacoota Endemic Garden on November 19th, where they were able to learn about the garden, receive some complementary plants and enjoy the music, coffee and sunny day. MADRA has been pleased to help fund and support this fantastic project, which is a truly collaborative effort.

Congratulations to all involved, particularly to the Friends of Mallacoota volunteers who have worked so hard on the construction of the garden. We look forward to seeing the plants grow and the space become even more beautiful. The Mallacoota Endemic Garden will provide an incredible place for years to come, not only for plant conservation and education but also for the local community and visitors to enjoy.

Social housing underway!

MADRA is thrilled to see the first of the social housing builds making progress in Hunter St. This project is the result of much lobbying and advocacy by the first and second MADRA committees, which came to fruition in April 2022, when MADRA received a letter from the then Minister of Housing, the Hon. Richard Wynn, promising that Homes Victoria would build ten new homes in Mallacoota – a mix of social and affordable dwellings.

MADRA has kept in constant contact with Homes Victoria ever since, monitoring the progress and receiving regular updates, and it is very gratifying to see the first few homes now taking shape.

Those wishing to be considered for a social housing option must sign up with the Victorian Housing Register. To find out more information about registering, to download an application form, or to check the status of an application please go to: https://www.housing.vic.gov.au/victorian-housing-register. For assistance with their online services you can call the help desk on 1800 961 883 (9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday). In addition, MDHSS receives some funding as the local agent for Homes Vic/DFFH and should be able to assist you with registering or checking on these details.

EGSC Coastal and Marine Management Plan

The East Gippsland Shire Council is currently developing a Coastal and Marine Management Plan (CMMP) for the coastal communities across East Gippsland, including Mallacoota. They are seeking community input and this can be supplied at the Council’s Your Say website: https://yoursay. eastgippsland.vic.gov.au/coastal-and-marine-management-plan.

We encourage community members and visitors to go onto Your Say and provide feedback, which is due by 11 December.
